A1 Beginner

A1.1

Foundation

A1.1 is a course designed for complete beginners. Students will learn to introduce themselves and others using essential French vocabulary. After starting with basics: the alphabet, numbers, students will use authentic materials from the French-speaking world to learn basic phrases. You will soon be able to ask and answer basic questions about yourself and others, including likes and dislikes! 

The focus in this class is particularly on listening and speaking skills, with some practice in reading and writing.

Foundation

A1.2 is designed for students who have completed A1.1 or false beginners (students who have learned French in the past, and still remember some). In this course, students will use authentic videos, interviews, infographics and more to learn about francophone cultures and how to speak about families and the homes where they live. By the end of the class, you will be able to describe the people in the family and the home where you live.  

False beginners coming into this class should be comfortable introducing themselves (name, age, and profession), using the verbs être and avoir. They should be able to ask basic questions and say things they like and dislike.

Foundation

A1.3 is designed for students who have completed A1.2 or false beginners (students who have learned French in the past, and still remember some). In this class, students will learn to describe their daily lives; their routines, work, and hobbies. By the end of the class, you will be able to describe aspect of a vacation you would like to take! 

False beginners coming into this class should be comfortable introducing themselves and others (name, age, and profession), using the verbs être and avoir, and -er verbs. They should be able to describe members of their family and homes.

A1.4 is designed for students who have completed A1.3.  Students in this class will learn to make purchases and describe cities. Additionally, they will begin to speak in the future and past tenses. By the end of the class, you will be able to present a recipe from your childhood.

French for Travelers

Specialty Language Classes
This 5-week course is designed for false beginners (those who have taken some French, but may not remember much) who are preparing to travel to a French-speaking country in the near future.  The focus of the course is on needed language tools to travel.  Students will be taught to introduce themselves, understand and ask for directions, order from a restaurant menu, purchase items, etc.

A2 Upper Beginner

A2.1

Foundation

A2.1 is for students who have completed A1.4 or finished approximately 100 hours of French study. The  A2 level moves student from basic French to get through the everyday, towards the ability to describe the world around them. In this class, students will use authentic documents to explore the shopping and health habits in French-speaking cultures, and then to describe their own. By the of the class, you will be able to describe an illness that you have, in the unfortunate event you have to go to the doctor in France!

In this course, students will examine some of the most popular topics in French study: food and sports. By the end of the class, you will be able to describe your favorite cultural dishes (maybe even learn about new favorites!) and talk about your experiences with sports.

This course is designed for students planning on taking the June or October 2025 DELF/DALF exams. In this class, students will review the writing tasks for the B1, B2, and C1 DELF exams. Students will practice short and long forms of the tasks, and get feedback in preparation for the exam.

This is not a grammar class, but grammar topics may be discussed if the instructor notices a need across students.

Foundation

This course is for students who have completed A2.4, or approximately 180-200 hours of French lessons. During this class, students will talk about their cultural roots and memories, and traditions and stories in the francophone world. By the end of the class, you will use various tenses to tell stories and memories with details.

Conversation
In this conversational course B1/B2 level students will read & discuss a variety of topics, learn new vocabulary, and immerse themselves in different cultural aspects of the Francophone world. Through a variety of activities, including discussions and presentations, students will improve their grammar, vocabulary and overall fluency.

Business French

Specialty Language Classes
For students interested in developing French business language skills. This workshop focuses on business vocabulary and know-how based on specific business situations. As an expansion on the Winter class, students will go beyond the basics of business etiquette and comportment. Topics may include types of businesses and staff, handling conflict, intellectual property, ethics, banking and accounting, searching for a job, marketing, and more. Students are welcome even if they did not take the Winter class, as long as they have the requisite level. Each class includes oral and written practice. Students should have a minimum B1 level. This is a 6-week class.

Casse-Croûte

Conversation

Les “casse-croûtes” de l’Alliance Francaise de Denver – Special Lunch Time Conversation Program BYOCC! (Bring Your Own Casse-Croûte !) From the literal translation to “break the crust” (as in breaking bread), the Casse-Croûte is a light meal shared between friends, colleagues, and family; a French version of a brown-bag lunch. Join us for a lively conversation based on current events/magazine articles/news, etc. related to your level of French. Conversations will be facilitated by the teacher who will prepare something different for each session. No textbook needed for this class.

This course is designed to encourage intermediate level students to converse. Each week, the instructor will choose a different theme and present authentic reading and listening materials to assist in generating discussion. Fun activities will be planned including role playing, presentations, discussions, games, designed to improve your grammar, vocabulary and overall fluency. Grammar mini-lessons may be added to assist students in their language.

This class is taught entirely in French.

This course is designed for B1 to C2 (intermediate to advanced) students. In this French conversation class, discussion about topics related to current events, culture, science, and economics, is of the essence. Each week, the instructor selects different themes, drawn from newspaper or magazine articles, podcasts, excerpts from literary texts, French movie clips, etc. Exchange of ideas is highly encouraged and fun. Emphasis on pronunciation and grammar is made when necessary.

Foundation

Develop your ability to express yourself fluently and spontaneously.  Strengthen and broaden your vocabulary; gain the ability to choose the appropriate expressions when introducing comments and expressing ideas; learn to produce clear, well-structured discourse.  The objective at the C1 level is to become an independent user of the French language.  

In this class, oral and written expression occur through activities and tasks achieved individually or collectively.  C1.3 will cover chapters 4 and 5 of Cosmopolite 5.  In each chapter, the themes and issues discussed (through literature, the arts, cinema, customs and traditions) will enrich your knowledge of French and Francophone cultures.

At the C2 level, students continue to develop their abilities to express themselves on a variety of familiar and unfamiliar topics with a high degree of fluency and spontaneity. Students will improve their ability to express and justify their ideas on complex topics using clear and specific vocabulary developed in each lesson. Ripped from the Headlines: Advanced Conversation and Current Events

Conversation

This course is designed for B1 to C2 (intermediate to advanced) students. In this French conversation class, discussion about topics related to current events, culture, science, and economics, is of the essence. Each week, the instructor selects different themes, drawn from newspaper or magazine articles, podcasts, excerpts from literary texts, French movie clips, etc. Exchange of ideas is highly encouraged and fun. Emphasis on pronunciation and grammar is made when necessary.
